Gateway to use Athlon
By Staff -- Purchasing, 2/10/2000
Computer maker Gateway will use AMD's Athlon microprocessors for its Select PCs. Gateway says it has been having difficulty getting motherboards and microprocessors from Intel, which supplies about 80% of the world's microprocessors.Gateway has used AMD processors before. About a year ago Gateway agreed to use AMD's K6-2 processors, but AMD had difficulty manufacturing the processors and AMD's relationship with Gateway soured.
So far AMD has not had any manufacturing problems with Athlon. Intel says it has been having trouble filling orders beyond existing commitments, which is good news for AMD because it means more computer companies will look for an alternative to Intel processors.
AMD also announced that Pionex, an East Coast computer manufacturer selling through the reseller channel, is offering commercial desktops and workstations based on Athlon.
The Athlon processor is a x86-compatible, seventh-generation design featuring a superscalar microarchitecture optimized for high clock frequency. It is manufactured on AMD's 0.18 micron process technology.
