Sales forecast, microchips

By Staff -- Purchasing, 7/15/1999

Global semiconductor sales are expected to reach $140.8 billion in 1999, a jump of 12.1% over 1998, fueled by sales of personal computers and other devices used for Internet access and e-commerce. The forecast contrasts with an 8.4% decline in 1998 sales to $125.61 billion. The Semiconductor Industry Association says 1999 "will be the first year of recovery in global semiconductor sales since 1995." The trade group predicts that industry sales will grow another 15.4% in 2000, 17.6% in 2001, and 12.9% in 2002.
