Market update, paper production

U.S. paper and paperboard output totaled 23.627 million tons in first quarter 1999, down 0.6% from year ago. The American Forest & Paper Association says first quarter paper output totaling 11.18 million tons was up 1.1% from first quarter 1998. Output of printing and writing grades was up 1.3% at 6.65 million tons, including a 4% increase in uncoated free-sheet output to 3.51 million tons. At 12.45 million tons, total board output was down 2%. At 5.25 million tons, unbleached kraft linerboard production was down 5.1% in the first three months of 1999, while recycled paperboard rose 2.8% to 3.91 million tons.
