Supplier quality levels hit a high point

By Staff -- Purchasing, 9/2/1999

THERE HAS BEEN A QUICK INFUSION OF OPTIMISM for buyers in the CPI, according to this month's survey. Sixty-seven percent of buyers expect business to be better in six months time, up from 37% last month. It is also the most optimistic buyers have been all year. Only 6% expect conditions to be worse--that's a decline of six points from last month.

Materials availability also remains good. Only 7% of buyers say materials are tight (down from 9% last month), and the vast majority--80%--say conditions are normal. Only 13% report loose availability--a drop of one point compared with last month.

Physical inventories are holding steady, with 73% of buyers saying inventory levels are the same as they were last month. Only 7% report rising inventories--a fall of 11 points from last month. Twenty percent are lowering inventories, that percentage is down by six points from last month.
