CAPACITY CHANGES

By Staff -- Purchasing, 9/2/1999

Shell Chemical, basf Corp., and Fina have signed a letter of intent to form a joint venture which would construct the world's largest butadiene extraction facility in Port Arthur, Texas. The facility is scheduled for start-up in 2002 and will have a capacity of 900 million lb/yr. It will be located next to the Fina refinery and the olefins steam cracker complex being constructed in Port Arthur by basf and Fina. The majority of the feedstock processed in the butadiene extraction facility will come from the Shell olefins complex in Deer Park, Texas, as well as the basf/Fina steam cracker, which will start up in early 2001.
