Equistar Chemicals, one of the world's largest petrochemical producers, has selected Reliant Energy of Houston to develop a co-generation plant to supply electricity and steam at Equistar's Channelview, Texas, facility and to provide power at up to 10 Equistar facilities in Texas. The project will generate approximately 750 megawatts of power and will be located east of Houston in Channelview, Texas, adjacent to the Equistar Channelview Complex. Output of the cogeneration plant will be sold through a long-term marketing agreement with Reliant Energy Services, Reliant Energy's wholesale energy-marketing company. The facility is expected to be one of the most efficient gas-fired power plants in the ecar through its ability to simultaneously produce large volumes of steam and electricity. "Securing reliable power at the lowest possible costs is a fundamental element of our focus on being the low-cost producer in the global petrochemical and polymer markets, says Eugene Allspach, president and COO of Equistar.
