Index jumps up, but buyers say it won't stay
By Staff -- Purchasing, 9/2/1999
Purchasing's index of industrial chemical prices rocketed up this month, growing a huge 15.25 points over last month to settle at 88.84. Large increases were seen for most of the indices, but none as big as that for industrial chemicals. Surprisingly, buyers still hold to predictions of lower or flat prices ahead--most indices are forecast to fall by second quarter 2000, or at the least remain stable. Many industrial chemical prices saw tags grow this month, indicating that many of the recent price increases producers have put forth are sticking--at least for now. This may only be a temporary setback for buyers, because the forecast remains for prices to decline in the fourth quarter of this year, and then begin a more gradual climb up in 2000.
Paper chemicals and aliphatics showed the most growth this month, rising 8.43 and 11.71 respectively.
