Phillips Petroleum
By Staff -- Purchasing, 11/4/1999
Phillips Petroleum and Solvay Polymers have agreed in principle to build and operate a high-density polyethylene (hdpe) manufacturing facility in the U.S. The facility will be the largest slurry loop reactor in the world, with a capacity of 700 million lb/yr. Phillips and Solvay will each own 50% of the plant, and will share in the production of general purpose hdpe. The facility will be built on one of the companies' existing U.S. manufacturing sites, and is expected to be operational in 2002. Phillips will provide the majority of the ethylene for the facility from its Sweeny, Texas, complex. The companies also intend to build a similar shared facility for start-up in 2005-2007, as the market dictates.
