Index rises, but buyers see a fall ahead

By Staff -- Purchasing, 11/4/1999

Purchasing's index of industrial chemical transaction prices rose 0.82 points this month, from 98.14 to 98.96. But buyers forecast prices to fall in early 2000, pushing the index down to 85 in the first quarter. It is forecast to rise after that--up to 88 in the third quarter.

Rising industrial chemical prices pushed up four other transaction price indices this month. Aromatics rose 1.32 points to 67.20. Coatings slid up 1.06 to 82.33, while Inorganics increased 0.70 to 87.40. Paper chemicals was up 1.01 to 93.9. For most indices, the forecast is for prices to decline early in 2000, then rise in the second and third quarters. The exceptions are for Aromatics, Coatings and Solvents, which are expected to start rising in the first quarter and continue throughout 2000.
