Ford to make low-emission pickups
By Staff -- Purchasing, 7/15/1999
Ford Motor will make only low-emission pickup trucks for sale in the U.S. and Canada starting with 2000 model year F-series pickup trucks. The "environmentally friendly" move by the world's No. 2 automaker will affect more than 800,000 F-series pickup trucks and 360,000 Ranger pickup trucks annually. Ranger pickups are scheduled to be low-emission by the 2001 model year. Last year, Ford said it would convert sport utility vehicles and Windstar minivans to low-emission vehicles. The action affected about one million vehicles annually. Ford believes the combined pollution-cutting effect of the emission actions is the equivalent to eliminating emissions from 350,000 full-sized pickup trucks. Costs of cleaning up emissions will not be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices, says CEO Jacques Nasser.
