Benchmark your status

Staff -- Purchasing, 6/20/2002

The high tech sector of the economy is moving haltingly toward recovery, but a profound lack of capital investment and capacity rationalization among component manufacturers in 2001 has many purchasing execs worried about 2003. This month's electronics leadtimes data shows what promises to be a growing gap between suppliers' most- and least-favored customers. Example: For every buyer receiving 64-Mb DRAMS in less than one week, there is another waiting 11-20 weeks for the same parts. For every buyer obtaining 64-Mb devices in 2-5 weeks, there are two waiting 6-10 weeks for delivery. A buyer waiting six or more weeks for 128-Mb DRAMS (half the population according to the latest survey) can consider him or herself in the least-favored customer category and should be looking now for ways to shore up market leverage before things really start to tighten up. A majority of tantalum capacitor buyers (56%) is looking at leadtimes in the 2-5 week range. For every buyer beating that benchmark, however, there are three waiting longer than five weeks. Other leadtime categories where some buyers are underperforming the market significantly include: 4-Mb SRAM , 8-MB flash, switches and printed circuit boards.
