OECD steel unit postpones decision
Staff -- Purchasing, 10/10/2002
Members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) steel committee have reached consensus on the need to scrap steel-sector subsidies, but have put off any decision on how to do so until a meeting in mid-December. Speaking at a press conference in Paris, OECDS Wolfgang Hubner says the steel group also delayed any decision on whether the steel negotiations should be part of broader talks on steel trade taking place under the auspices of the World Trade Organization. The OECD discussions are occurring in the context of European government and industry concern at the decision earlier this year by the U.S. government to extend subsidies to its beleaguered steel industry. The sector is marred by overcapacity and the OECD talks are aimed at finding ways to end government support for ailing steel companies, a practice recognized as exacerbating oversupply.
