TI dominates DSP market

Staff -- Purchasing, 5/20/2004

Texas Instruments (TI) grew its digital signal processor revenue 35% in 2003 to remain the top DSP supplier.

TI had sales of $2.9 billion and controlled 47% of the total DSP market. Agere Systems was a distant second with $670 million in DSP sales and 11% of the market. Motorola finished the year with $631 million in DSP revenue and about 10% of the total market.

TI's DSPs are designed into about 60% of all cellular phones. Besides handsets, DSPs are used in wireless base stations, especially those for third generation (3G) communications.

With movement to 2.5 and 3G standards rising, TI and other suppliers expect DSP business to remain strong in 2004.
