HewlettPackard, the biggest buyer in the IT industry with an annual spend of $40 billion, has placed five of its largest suppliers on review for failure to sign up for its social responsibility program. HP requires suppliers to sign a Social and Environmental Responsibility Agreement and to follow its product content environmental specifications. Dick Conrad, HP's top buyer, wants to ensure that products are recyclable when feasible, are free of toxic materials and conserve energy. HP wants halogen-free plastics for computer monitors and printers. Conrad said HP is even supporting early work on biodegradable polymers. For information on HP's programs,
