The Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) released a new monthly index in March. The Transportation Services Index (TSI) is gathered from a range of government and private sources and measures “the volume of services performed by the for-hire transportation sector” in both the freight and passenger sectors, according to a BTS statement. The freight portion of the TSI tracks trucking and parcel services, freight railroad services, inland waterway traffic, pipeline movements and air freight and compares month-to-month and year-to-year levels going back to 1990. It does not include international or coastal steamship movements, private trucking, courier services, or the United States Postal Service. The DOT says the index is still under development and is considered “experimental.”
The first TSI data release in March showed on a seasonally adjusted basis, the TSI for freight decreased 0.9% in January, falling from a record high of 120.9 the month before (December 2003). The January 2004 level was 2.3% higher than the January 2003 level.
