- QOcean freight rates on the Baltic Dry Index declined 50 points in late July, or 2.4%, to 2004 points, the lowest since April 4, 2003, according to London's Baltic Exchange. The index was down 68% from a Dec. 6 record and is heading for its fifth consecutive monthly drop. The global capacity of dry-bulk carriers stood at 333.6 million deadweight metric tons at the end of June, up 8% from a year ago, according to London-based Drewry Shipping Consultants.
- DHL-Sinotrans opened its Country Quality Control Centre (QCC) in Beijing recently, which will provide DHL-Sinotrans customers with dynamic shipment movement management services. The quality control centre in China will also add to the sophistication and efficiency of the system control capabilities of DHL's leading air express network.
- Thomas Arlt has been named vice president of logistics and IT at BMW Manufacturing Co. in Spartanburg, S.C. He replaces Manfred Stoeger, who has assumed responsibility for after sales technical services and market development for BMW in Munich. Arlt has most recently been manager of logistics product planning at BMW's Regensburg plant in Germany where he was responsible for supply chain planning, packaging planning, and supply chain quality within all car projects.
- UPS has agreed to acquire U.K.-based parcel carrier LYNX Express for $96.5 million. LYNX Express, in addition to its parcel delivery service, offers customers a broad suite of logistics and spare-parts logistics services. UPS expects to complete the transaction in the second half of 2005.
- NAL Worldwide has agreed to acquire the SIRVA Logistics business assets from North American Van Lines, a subsidiary of SIRVA Inc.
- Rates for shipping oil out of the Persian Gulf to Asia are skyrocketing. According to market watcher E.A. Gibson, freight rates for oil tankers on routes to Asia almost doubled in July because of a surge of bookings for the end of July and beginning of August.
