The more things change, the more they stay the same. From 1957 onward, Inland Steel was based at 30 West Monroe Street (the corners of Monroe and Dearborn Streets) in downtown Chicago. Later, the architecturally important and stainless steel-clad Inland Steel Building served as the main offices for Ispat Inland Steel. Now, Mittal Steel USA has chosen Chicago's Loop for its new headquarters—in a new building just a short northerly walk away from 30 West Monroe. Mittal Steel USA was formed in April 2005 by merging Ispat Inland of Chicago and International Steel Group of Cleveland. It now has operations in 12 states. The firm's new executive offices will be in the One South Dearborn building, a new 40-story tower downtown at the southeast corner of Madison and Dearborn streets. Mittal Steel USA expects to occupy its new quarters in January, bringing together members of a management team who have been based in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and elsewhere. "Mittal Steel is the largest and most global steel company in the world, so it is very fitting for us to locate our domestic headquarters in one of America's truly world-class cities," says Louis Schorsch, chief executive officer. The firm's parent, Netherlands-based Mittal Steel Co., the world's largest steel company, has operations in 14 countries on four continents.
