Staff -- Purchasing, 11/3/2005

  • Metals service center chain Reliance Steel & Aluminum of Los Angeles has joined with New Wave Technologies and Manufacturing Network, both of Singapore, to form joint venture Reliance Pan Pacific. The new firm will absorb Everest Metals (Suzhou), a metals service center firm that processes and distributes primarily aluminum products to the Chinese electronics industry.
  • Alcoa Bohai Aluminum Industries, a new smelter, has been created by China's CITIC Group, the country's biggest state-owned financial group, and Alcoa. Joseph Muscari, executive vice president, says Alcoa aims to start producing ingot in 2008 and 22,300 metric tons annually of high-quality aluminum products.

  • Copper and Brass Sales has opened full-line nonferrous metals service center in Salt Lake City, to serve customers in Utah, southern Idaho, Northern Nevada, Montana and Wyoming. This location also will provide a small order department for walk-in customers.
  • Praxair Electronics is buying a high-purity aluminum refining and casting operation in Mercus, France, from Alcan. The transaction is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2006. High-purity aluminum is used in the production of sputtering targets for the semiconductor and flat-panel display markets.

  • U.S. Antimony has successfully started up a new plant to recover antimony metal from a legacy slag stockpile at Thompson Falls, Mont. • Minnesota Steel Industries will construct a steel slab plant instead of the previously planned hot-rolled sheet in coil plant. The company made the decision because they believe a slab plant will bring more interest from processors in the Great Lakes region.

  • SteelCorr now is SeverCorr as Severstal Group of Russia has invested in the joint venture to build and operate a new, state-of-the-art steel mill in Columbus, Miss. The steel mill, which is due to be commissioned in the third quarter of 2007, will produce up to 1.5 million metric tons annually of high-quality flat-rolled steel products for the southern U.S. automobile steel market.
