In addition to the EPA regulations on diesel engines highlighted in the Green Purchasing story package in this issue of PURCHASING, there are a host of other initiatives and projects in the works for logistics.
The American Trucking Associations' Board of Directors recently revised its alternative fuels policy to advocate the use of biodiesel in blends up to 5% as part of the national diesel fuel standard. The new policy serves to both combat rising fuel prices and help shape a comprehensive national energy plan. ATA President and CEO Bill Graves said, "Biodiesel represents an important part of a long-term energy plan designed to increase the nation's fuel supply and reduce our dependence on foreign oil."
Union Pacific Railroad said recently it will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions at its Houston and Fort Worth rail yards by introducing 10 new low-emission, hybrid locomotives. The state-of-the-art hybrid-technology locomotives, called "Green Goats," are designed to cut air emissions by 80% and reduce diesel fuel use by 40% compared to conventional diesel-powered locomotives used in switching service.
Signaling a dramatic broadening of its environmental programs, the Port of Los Angeles is actively seeking ways to use biofuels as an alternative to diesel-fueled engines as a means to significantly reduce air emissions from its operations.
