  • Deutsche Bank Securities

    analyst Jordan Alliger recently initiated coverage in the oil tanker industry, predicting that supply and demand fundamentals should stay solid for 2005, but that the peak is near. "This [2005] will be another solid year for the oil tanker industry, as the tension between supply and demand stays tight," he said. "However, there is a high probability that at some point over the next 24-30 months the industry will see not just a fall-off in rates, but a significant downdraft."

  • Demand and pricing for rail services will remain high, according to executives at the two largest U.S. railroads, Union Pacific

    and Burlington Northern Santa Fe. At a recent investors conference, executives from both companies said demand for their services is expected to remain strong "Today, the value of the U.S. rail transportation system to the economy has reached, I believe, an all-time high level," said BNSF CEO Matthew Rose at the Merrill Lynch investors conference recently.

  • UPS

    recently unveiled its Quantum View Inbound technology enhancement that automatically notifies customers of every package in the UPS system moving toward them. Quantum View Inbound provides proactive notification of UPS air express, ground and international packages that are en route to the receivers location and helps businesses better prepare for delivery activities in such areas as staffing, accounting, stocking, and customer service.

  • Con-Way Transportation Services'

    Mexican operating company, Con-Way Mexico Express

    , has opened a network of six logistics centers to serve the major commercial shipping markets in Mexico July 4. "Building this network is the next logical step in providing Con-Way service throughout all the NAFTA markets," said David S. McClimon, president of Con-Way.

  • Yellow-Roadway

    is working to integrate some of its recent acquisitions to make a more consolidated operation. To that end, it has shifted some of the coverage for its newly acquired USF divisions. The company closed its USF Dugan regional division July 8, saying its USF Bestway, USF Holland and USF Reddaway will expand their coverage to collectively fill the areas previously served by USF Dugan. Customers of New Penn Motor Express and USF Glen Moore are not directly impacted by the shift.

  • Schneider Logistics

    has agreed to acquire American Port Services, a leading U.S. provider of port transloading/deconsolidation, warehousing, and distribution services in Savannah, Ga. "Linking the inland truckload/deconsolidation, intermodal and third-party capacity of Schneider National with American Port Services transloading and port dray operation will create a unique port-to-door import logistics service," says Chris Lofgren, president and CEO of Schneider National.
