Inflation vs. Slowdown

Opposing forces have the U.S. economy precariously balanced, ready to tip one way or the other. One camp says the economy soon will slump severely and threaten recession. Another camp says reaccelerating growth will boost inflation higher. The only thing that's coming into sharper focus is that the Federal Reserve is likely to keep interest rates steady—at least until it sees which way the economy really is going.
