Wide-flange beam supply tight
By Staff -- Purchasing, 5/3/2007
The steel beam market has been buoyed by robust nonresidential construction activity for more than a year now so that "some structural sizes are not readily available," says Cheryl Wolfe, procurement manager at steel fabricator Steelco in Sinking Spring, Pa. Mill deliveries have been averaging about six weeks lately and second-quarter order books are said to be almost full. Buyers will get no help from offshore mills since structural steel imports have been running around 9% of supply in each of the past four years and half are specialty products not produced domestically.
