Methanol supply about to expand
By Staff -- Purchasing, 5/3/2007
A springtime collapse in demand has triggered a decline in the price of methanol, a chemical used to make products ranging from windshield washer fluid to paints, from plastics to plywood. In fact, Gulf Coast spot-market values in April are down by around 55% since the start of the year. Leadtimes, meanwhile, have shrunk to just about two months for producer delivery. Deliveries probably will get quicker soon since several methanol plants in Trinidad are boosting supply—reopening this month and last after catalyst replacement and some additional upgrading work.
