Next Fuel: Biobutanol

New fermentation techniques will allow butanol to be derived from biological sources. So, in time, biobutanol may race ahead of ethanol as a gasoline additive or motor fuel, says senior research engineer Andy Aden at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo. He says "biobutanol has a higher energy content and a higher octane rating than ethanol, so vehicles will get better fuel mileage."
