New high in February plastic resins price index

WHAT IT MEANS: More than 70% of buyers polled in February said plastic resin prices went up, while none said they went down. That put the diffusion index at a record high of 85.2. A year ago, that index was at 55.9.

Tons of new soda ash capacity planned by FMC

WHAT IT MEANS: FMC is re-comissioning capacity at its Granger soda ash plant in Wyoming, which will bring the additional capacity to market by 2012. FMC cited soda ash demand in the export market, and improved business profitability in the decision.

WHAT IT MEANS: Buyers reported organic and inorganic chemicals increasing in February, pushing indexes for both close to record highs hit in December.
