Buyers reporting transportation price increases in May

WHAT IT MEANS: The transportation services price index hit a record high in April and again in May, driven by increased fuel surcharges. And 88% of buyers polled expect the higher rates to continue.

WHAT IT MEANS: That's a 5% uptick from the previous surcharge. The surcharge is based on U.S. Gulf Coast prices for kerosene-type jet fuel reported by the U.S. Department of Energy for the month that is two months prior to the adjustment.

WHAT IT MEANS: That's up slightly from last year, but well off the record 378,000 built in the boom year of 2006, the "pre-buy" year leading into the tighter EPA emissions standards.
