Westlake Chemical announced plans to build a new $250-$300 million chlor-alkali plant at its vinyls manufacturing complex in Geismar, La. The new plant is expected to produce an estimated 250,000 electro-chemical units per year, giving Westlake total annual capacity of 525,000 in the first half of 2011.
The Houston Business Journal points out that this is the third expansion announcement in a year for Westlake, which previously announced plans to expand its Calvert City, Ky. operations and the construction of a new PVC pipe plant in Arizona.
