What slowdown? PC shipments rise 14.5% in second quarter

Computer shipments will rise 12% for the year

Worldwide PC unit shipments grew 14.5% in the second quarter of 2008 compared to the same period a year, defying economic and financial woes, according to researcher iSuppli. Shipments increased to 70.2 million units compared to 61.3 million in the second quarter of 2007.

“PC shipments came in higher than forecast,” says Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst, compute platforms for iSuppli. “iSuppli maintains its enthusiasm for the PC market in 2008, despite the challenging conditions. iSuppli’s latest forecast for the 2008 PC market estimates unit growth of 12.5%.”

Hewlett-Packard Co. had second-quarter PC shipments of 13.4 million units to maintain its worldwide top ranking with 19.1% market share. Dell was the number two PC company as it shipped 11.2 million units for a 16% market share and Acer shipped the third most computers as it unit shipments totaled 6.6 million. It garnered 9.5% of the PC market.
