New container review

By Staff -- Purchasing, October 7, 1999

One of the great benefits of a robust and competitive bulk packaging industry is the constant addition of new and advanced containers to product lines. Here is a quick look at some recent additions in intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), drums, and bulk bags.

- Clawson Container has signed with Fustiplast of Italy to manufacture the PassportTank in North America. This IBC allows for a new model, which is of a global design, letting users transport and dispose of the container anywhere in the world. For bulk liquid material, the PassportTank can be stacked three-high, and is available in 220-, 275- and 300-gallon versions. It has a blow-molded polyethylene bottle and either steel or interlocking wood pallet.

- Russell Stanley has introduced several new drums. The 55-gallon tight head steel drum has a "W" hoop style for maximum freight use and vacuum resistance. The Delcon EC 55-gallon tight head plastic drum is geared for the electronic chemical industry for ultra-pure storage and shipping. The Delcon E-style open-head plastic drum handles solids and food-grade products. The Delcon fiber replacement 40-gallon open head plastic container is designed for the handling of solids and liquids previously packaged in fiber drums. The Delcon HOT 55-gallon plastic drum is an open-head drum that promises the performance of a tight-head drum in an accessible open-head design. The L-2 55-gallon plastic drum is optimally drainable to less than 50 milliliters. While designed to meet the needs of the oil industry, the drum is available for the textile and specialty chemical industries. The L-R ISO tight-head 55-gallon plastic drum allows for reduced freight costs by the maximization of export payloads.

- Greif Bros. has introduced the P-15G series tight-head plastic drums made from high-molecular weight high-density polyethylene. The company also has introduced the HP drum, a high-pressure drum for vapor pressures as high as 60 psi at 131°F. The drum is constructed with a reinforcing ring welded to the head and bottom of the drum for a structure that will resist distortion.

- Snyder Industries has introduced Bulk Guard, an IBC system that allows for interchangeable poly-bottles and maintains a heavy-duty double-wall plastic construction for high impact resistance and a high level of protection for the bottle. The Bulk Guard can act as a secondary containment to the poly bottle. Snyder has also introduced the Megatainer--a high-volume method of chemical transportation. The poly-IBC holds up to 550-gallons, and is constructed of Þ-inch rotationally molded polyethylene.

- MacMillan Bloedel Bulk Packaging has introduced the SpaceKraft UltraCube, a corrugated IBC offering seamless seven wall thick sleeves with 17 tons of compression strength. The IBC has an inner coextruded polyethylene bottle for non-hazardous and Groups II and III hazardous liquids. The container eliminates bulging and can be stacked three high. It is also an ISO dimensional package and provides superior moisture protection.

- BAG Corp. has introduced a line of specialty liner products for boxes, drums, and bulk bag containers. The liners come in tubular, fitted, static control, and foil designs.

- Paper Systems has introduced the Ez-Pak8, an FIBC for non-hazardous liquids. In sizes up to 330 gallons, the containers can be stacked outdoors or indoors and have a reinforced woven poly outer construction with a flexible PE inner liner.

- Smurfit-Stone Container has introduced three new bulk bag products: Pallet-Pal, a rectangular bulk bag designed to fit a 40x48 shipping pallet; the Multi-Sizer bulk bag for products with varying bulk densities or for products that de-aerate and condense after filling; and the Remote Release bulk bag, which allows for a remote-release cord for discharge, so users can be out of range when opening the bags.
