Back to School
August 7, 2008
Face it. Summer is on the wane. I was driving the other night and I had my car lights on a little past 7. And, I'm seeing the back to school ads on television. I'm not happy with this transition, especially when I am staring at excessive heating oil bills and fiscally challenged communities who are spreading less and less salt on our icy New England roads. To me, winter is to be endured, not necessarily enjoyed.
It seems as the weather cools we are preprogrammed to think about school. Working on a college campus certainly amplifies this feeling especially as we see the freshman come for orientation, the athletes begin to prepare for their upcoming fall season, and the inexorable flood of e-mails scheduling pre-semester academic meetings.
Now is the time for you to think about school as well. Economic cycles not withstanding, the importance of education has never been more important. Whether it is to complete a degree that you've never finished, tackling a masters degree, working towards professional certification, or just taking a course for enjoyment, now is the time to get motivated. Our profession is changing. Employers are looking for agile, thoughtful, and motivated employees.
But there is still a lot more summer left. Enjoy it….. safely.
