Please Mr. Postman

Deliver the letter…the sooner the better.
Some of you may remember the final words in the Marvelettes's 1960s hit "Please Mr. Postman." But classic song lyrics aside, the postal rates are going up this spring once again, this time by a penny. We are being driven digital a penny at a time.
Now, I am not a proponent of price increases. I think they are insidious, and once you get comfortable with them they are easier to take. But, I think it is time that the postal service round up to either 45¢ or 50¢ and end this incremental agony. We know there is cost pressure on the post office and ultimately it is still a bargain to mail a letter, even at 50¢. Forecast the costs and let it fly. We'll adjust. And just maybe there will be less junk mail and catalogs in the mail every day.
Tom, my impersonal but efficient mail carrier, may appreciate a lighter load.

I agree with Richard. It is insidious for the post office to raise the cost a penny at a time. It is costly to print literature with new prices. Round the cost up to 45 cents or 50 cents, then leave the prices alone. The post office does not get it---people will adjust. People have not stopped using stamps.

yes, i second that emotion...i'd rather just get it over with the price increase, accept it and move, rather than search around for two pennies or be handed more pennies on the way out...i bought some of those stamps that last forever...but naturally, i cannot get my fingertips on them!!

That's all very nice to say, but even the penny increase causes MAJOR DISTRESS to the many fixed income and business customers that the Postal Service likely relies on for revenue. The first class stamp is nothing to them - look at their financials. They have two stakeholders who complain regularly: (1) Business (bulk mail); and (2) Senior Citizens. Both of these would much rather see $0.01 change five-times each year than a prospective $0.05 increase up front. Ask any of them if you don't believe me. Business is business...
