IFPSM – International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management
June 5, 2007

The Golden Jubilee Convention as ISM called it opened in New York in May 1965. Now we call it an International Conference.Purchasing was taking a new direction when it was announced during the convention that an International Federation of Purchasing had been formed. For several years, N.A.P.A. had taken part in the unofficial discussions among a number of purchasing associations throughout the world.

In 1961, Former President Paisley Boney and Wilson B. Wight were designated as representatives for ISM to attend planning sessions which led to an international federation, out of which grew the International Committee of Purchasing and eventually the Federation.I was looking on the ISM website; however I could not find the IFPSM logo.I have a membership folder from ISM that shows the emblem and notes “ISM is a member of the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management”.

Today the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM) is the union of 43 national and regional purchasing associations worldwide.Within this circle, about 200,000 purchasing professionals can be reached. The participating associations are working toward their goal of exchanging purchasing information and ideas on a worldwide basis. If you are a member of ISM, did you realize you were a part of this?

There are two members listed in the USA:

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM).

National Institute of Government Purchasing (NIGP)

Also our Canadian friends are members, Purchasing Management Association of Canada (PMAC)

Paul Novak, C.P.M., A.P.P. of ISM, USA, is President Elect. Then Richard D. Rich with ISM is a Regional Vice President and Robert Dye with PMAC in Canada is on the Board of Directors.

In the May 2007 issue of Inside Supply Management, Michael Schwanz, editor, talks about his visit to Bath, England to attend the IFPSM meeting. This meeting drew more than 30 supply management associations from around the world.

Ken James, the President of IFPSM and the CEO of The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply in Stanford, Lincs, England stated, “We called it the Association World Summit for a reason;the idea was for associations to share knowledge so we all get better at what we do.”James say, “The groups from around the world seem to be attempting to deal with similar issues, but maybe approaching them from different angles, with a varying level of understanding. We hope that by sharing views, we will also get a more rounded understanding of the key issues facing our profession.”

I am surprised that ISM does not make a bigger deal about this.Evidently it appears that

ISM was a charter member. With Paul as President Elect, this is a great honor for ISM.

I think this would make a great topic at our International Conference. What do you think? What are some of the issues facing purchasing associations around the world?

I am just wondering if the other parts of the world are losing members, lack of attendance at the dinner meetings and wondering what to do to improve. If I have missed an article on this with ISM, let me know.
