The Supply Management Handbook
August 6, 2007
Is it not great to go to a magazine and you recognize people writing articles, being interviewed, and doing some really great things. Purchasing , Industrial Distribution Magazine and Industry Week lately have featured some people I know.
IW has an article called “The Hitchhikers Guide to Purchasing” about “The Supply Management Handbook.” One of the authors is Ralph G. Kaufman, a member of our local ISM-Dallas affiliate. One of my good friends at Hagemeyer, a vice-president, was given this book by some of his employees. I took the book to our meeting and got Dr. Kaufman to autograph the book. This book was shown all over the company because if was autographed. I love books and when I go to a conference or a meeting and I can get an autographed book from the speaker, I always buy it. I hate to admit it; I have not bought the Supply Management Handbook yet and had Dr. Kaufman sign it. This is on my growing to-do list.
Supply: The Expanding Edges of Purchasing. That’s how the seventh edition of “The Supply Management Handbook” starts out – offering readers a glimpse into how purchasing has evolved since the 1920s.
The article goes on to state: For more than three decades of the evolution, The Supply Management Handbook (formerly the Purchasing Handbook) has been offering guidance to purchasing and supply professionals. The latest edition encompasses the ongoing shift from simple purchasing to a new, more technology-based imperative – identifying and managing supply chain sources and strategies.
As they say, “I know we have come a long way, Baby”, however when was purchasing ever simple. I know we are moving from tactical to strategic, we hear this everyday. However, don’t discount the past; we have had some great leaders and workers in just plain purchasing.
