“The Purchasing Revolution” is recognized
June 6, 2007

We have come a long way. To get a sense for how long the purchasing profession has come, I wanted to go back to what John A. Hill, then president of Air Reduction Company, said about the “The Purchasing Revolution” at the 1953 NAPA convention in Los Angeles.

John stated that the merging purchasing department is a far cry from the old buying clerk that the change seems more like revolution than evolution. This is what he based the topic of his speech on that he presented at the convention.

In his speech, John presented five concepts that he felt were basic in modern purchasing.

Purchasing had changed from a service function to a profit making activity.Purchasing should be a separate department reporting to top level management. It was thought that purchasing should be involved way before the purchase order was created. We now want to work in the research and development of new products along with the engineers.

The need to have highly skilled purchasing agents fits right in to the educational programs and certifications that N.A.P.A.would furnish its members.Purchasing should be represented in the top meetings in the company. These are things that some purchasing agents are still trying to accomplish within their organizations.

Purchasing agents must be prepared to handle a larger role in the company. The need for continued education in the field is evident. With the changing of duties, if you stand still, you will be left behind. We can no longer claim an 8 to 5 job, we have to give it that extra and make time for improving our knowledge and skills.

Mr. Hill concluded is speech with “The activities of this association and its extensive educational programs are abundant evidence that you men are well aware of both the opportunity and the danger and that you are moving to meet the challenge of a full partnership in management willingly and with courage and intelligence.”

In Mr. Hill’s closing note he is addressing this to men.At this time N.A.P.A. was a men’s association.I am not sure when this changed.Let me know if you have any information on this. What is now ISM-Dallas, the affiliate’s first lady president was Lee Stafford in 1977.
