How to handle an interview
June 1, 2007
Do you have butterflies in the stomach? Are your palms sweaty? The pros say take a deep breath and say “I can do this.”
Be prepared.Try to find out what type of interview you are facing:
- Telephone screen
- Human Resources
- One-on-one with decision maker
- Group interview:executive team
- Group interview:cross-functional team/peers
- Stress interview
- Exercise/role-play/in-box test
- Personality test
- Others
If you know what type of interview you are facing, it makes it easier to prepare.
Most Human Resource Departments provide managers with the questions to ask. It is like a canned interview. There are very rigid rules on what is allowed in an employment interview.
Types of Interview Questions
Traditional
- Tell me about yourself.
- Where do you see yourself in five years?
- What are your greatest strengths/weaknesses?
Do we really realize what our own weaknesses are unless they are pointed out to us?
Odd Ball
- If you were an animal, what kind of animal would you be and why?
If you say Lion you might be considered strong and aggressive. If you said kitty, you might be considered sweet and easy to get along with. I know this type of question is supposed to show a meaning, however I really don’t buy in to this.
Situational
- What would you do if you were leading a team whose members didn’t get along?
- If we were to hire you, what is the first thing you would do?
Show up for work on time. Some upper management clean the department and bring in their own staff. This is one like think out of the box questions? What is a good answer?
