Career Development
May 30, 2007

Sometime back, I attended a career development workshop sponsored by the ISM-Dallas affiliate. It was at the time when workshops and seminars were not being funded by companies and attendance was low.Again, companies are not anxious to send their employees to a career development workshop that tells them how to update their resume.

Being with the same company for 25 years, I have never really had a resume, especially a professional resume by an expert. Some advice to the workforce, always keep your resume up to date. With the constant change in companies, buy outs, layoffs and etc. you should be prepared.

Who can do your resume better than you? You know where you have been; and you know where you want to go; think again. A resume presents you to the decision makers on hiring. It might be to your benefit to have a professional resume writer help you out with this. I have been asked to review resumes of many of my friends, and I am no expert, but remember computers have spell checks.

If you are a member of a professional organization, many offer assistance in updating your resume. Also they offer help in job searches and some post resumes on their websites. Check in to what your organization offers.

A resume is like a birth certificate, you need to have it handy. Speaking of birth certificates, a few years ago, I went to the Court House in Denton, Texas to get a passport. You have to consider that many years had passed since I was born in St. Paul Hospital in Dallas. The clerk told me I did not have a birth certificate. My parents could not decide on a name and never went to the court house to give me a name. The records showed “no name Day”. How do you get a social security number, work for years, file tax returns and you have a no name birth certificate?  Believe me, I was a little upset. Luckily, my father at 90 filled out a form, had it notarized, and got a birth certificate. Lesson learned--be prepared, right? Same with resumes.

Did you know there are three resume styles?

Chronological: Reverse chronological presentation of work history. Should be heavily focused on accomplishments rather than duties. Preferred listing is current to early.

Functional: Pulls out and groups together related functional experience, skills and related accomplishments. Pure functional resumes include bare-bones information about your work history (title, company, date) at the bottom of the resume.

Hybrid: Contains elements of both chronological and functional. Most resumes today are hybrids, neither pure chronological nor pure functional.

Note:In all cases:Accomplishment – focused resumes are the most powerful.

We all know people with great job titles, nice offices and wonder what they do. Titles do not always reveal accomplishments.Brag a little. Tell them what you have accomplished.

I thought Supply Chain Management had a lot of certifications.Look at the various certifications for career counseling:

Master Resume Writer (MRW)

Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW)

Certified Career Management Practitioner (CMP)

Certified Employment Interview Professional (CEIP)

Job and Career Transition Coach (JCTC)

Credentialed Career Master (CCM)

Guess we all have our specialties. Look for this if you want a master resume writer.
