What about Facebook?
According to Wikipedia, Facebook is defined as “a popular, free access networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school and region to connect and interact with other people.”
Most users look at Facebook as more a social network, whereas LinkedIn is a business oriented social network.
The websites name refers to the paper facebooks depicting members of a campus community that some US colleges and preparatory schools give to incoming students, faculty and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus.
Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook while he was a student at Harvard in February 2004. Website membership was initially limited to Harvard students. Facebook eventually expanded to other Ivy League colleges. It went from university students, thru high school students and finally anyone aged 13 and over. The website is free to users, but generates revenue from advertising. The website currently has more than 140 million active users worldwide. LinkedIn has 30 million registered users.
Facebook users have a wall, a space on every user’s profile page that allows friends to post messages for the user to see. Pokes allows users to send a virtual “poke” to each other. One of the most popular applications on Facebook is the Photo Application, where users can upload albums and photos. I remember years ago using “Prodigy”. I can’t remember exactly how it worked other than being able to converse with people all over the world. One young man that I conversed with was always helping me with computer problems.
We all like to connect, to fit in, to be one of the group. Think about trying one of the many sites available today, and you will find a friend, someone you know. It is fun. Just remember you can spend a lot of your time on these sites.
