QBQ
Have your read the book The Question Behind the Question?
John G. Miller is the author of the book which focuses on practicing personal accountability at work and in life. Personal accountability is a hot topic in today’s world.
We all know and work with people, that no matter what, it is someone else’s fault. They need to read this book.
We all know the Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
QBQ put a different twist on it: God grant me the serenity to accept the people I can not change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to know its me. My mother had her own twist on this: after 60 years of marriage, she always said, “Don’t marry someone thinking you can change them, it won’t work.” You can only change yourself.
John Miller goes on to say we buy too many books. I am guilty. I love books and have a stack yet to read. In our world today, we attend seminars, take all kinds of classes on the internet and even play audios in our car to learn as we go. We forget sometimes to read something for pleasure, like a good mystery.
It is all wasted if we’re unclear on what learning really is. Bet you have read a lot of definitions on this. Let’s look at what Miller tells us learning is NOT first. “Learning is not attending, listening or reading. Nor is it merely gaining knowledge. Learning is really about translating knowing what to do into doing what we know. It’s about changing,” Miller says.
If you have taken any exams lately, many of the questions are application questions. Put to use what you have learned to come up with the answer.
This all reminds me of the old saying, “He has a lot of book learning but no common sense.” Or “He does not have sense enough to come in out of the rain.” Why do we label people like this? We all have our hang-ups. We can always work on self improvement. As adults we know better; as children we did not.
