Managers vs. Leaders
Are managers and leaders always the same person? I was reading an article by Ken Killen in a recent ISM Materials Management Group newsletter that got me thinking. In the article, Killen discusses the differences between managers and leaders and points out that it is often said the difference is this: a manager does things right. A leader does the right thing.
And after much thought and research, Killen came up with what I see as a very good definition of strong leadership: “Good leadership is the ability to inspire others to move enthusiastically towards the organization’s goals.”
Killen also quotes Peter Drucker as saying that, “Leadership cannot be created or promoted. It cannot be taught or learned. Management cannot create leaders. It can only create the conditions under which potential leadership qualities become effective or it can stifle potential leadership.”
Food for thought.
