  • Is 5S Implementation Truly Worth the Effort?

    June 9, 2008

Have you checked the Internet lately for the latest information on the 5S program?  Allow a lot of time because there is a lot of information out there!

What is 5S?  5S, abbreviated from the Japanese words Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke, are simple but effective methods to organize the workplace.

The 5S translated into English are:  housekeeping, workplace organization, clean up, keep cleanliness and discipline.

Much is being written on the 5 pillars of the virtual workplace, most commonly known as 5S.  The S methods of this methodology are:  Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain.  Some versions use systematic organization for set in order.

No matter the exact titles, a 5S implementation creates a workplace environment with fewer defects, less waste, fewer delays, fewer injuries, and fewer breakdowns.  These advantages translate to lower cost and improved quality.

Sort – (Sieri) The first S focuses on eliminating unnecessary items from the workplace.  The sort process also helps prevent the JIC job mentality (Just In Case).

Set In Order – (Seiton) is the second S and focuses on efficient and effective storage methods.  There should be “A place for everything and everything in its place.”
I used to run my house like that.  However in past years, I have decided to do more what I want to do than more what I should do.  I could red tag a bunch of stuff that would be classified as unneeded items.

Shine – (Seiso) this means to thoroughly clean the work area.  I have seen in warehouses where employees are assigned an area and they take great pride in making it shine.

Standardize – (Seiketsu) this is the setting up of best practices in your warehouse.  Employees should be allowed to formalize the program.  The person that does the work can offer a lot of input into the process.

Sustain – (Shitsuke) This is the most difficult S to implement and achieve.  Human nature is to resist change.  The tendency is to return to the status quo and the comfort zone of the “old way” of doing things.

You can see the change in a warehouse that is implementing the 5S program.  You see signs go up and equipment in place.  Most of what I have read it is a transition in warehouse operations.  I am told this will move in to the office environment.  You talk about a change.  Purchasing agents do not have a set in stone way of doing things.  We all use RFQ’s , RFP’s and purchase orders, however we have numerous ways of getting to this point and getting information.  Do you really think we could standardize our
work habits?  In a simple expedite report, I see that many buyers tackle it a different way.

As mentioned before, the Internet is loaded with information.  When you visit some of your suppliers, check out the warehouse, many large companies have put this practice in to place.
