Electric Generators

An Electric Generator Overview

Electric generators mean you have power when you need power, regardless of weather conditions, job site settings or location. They come in different sizes and different wattages. When you decide to purchase an electric generator, you will find wattage and voltage to be crucial factors in generator sizing. Other features to consider in your choice of generator include maintenance, location concerns, portability and costs.

Purchase considerations

Wattage

Wattage is calculated by taking the number of volts times the number of amps. Both of those items can be found on the information sticker on the back or bottom of the device or appliance you want to power. These numbers are the highest the item will utilize, not necessarily typical running power, so your wattage calculation will be high.

The wattage calculation is important because you will need to know the total number of watts you will use at one time in order to choose the best electrical generator for your needs. Execute the calculation for everything you use at one time and add those numbers up to get your total wattage.

Some industrial application estimates are:

Maintenance

Different generators require varying degrees of maintenance. While every generator should have service twice a year, electrical generators require special attention to the batteries. The battery should be checked at least once a month and filled with distilled water if low. When selecting a model, consider time and part expense for replacement batteries, fluids, filters, and calibration.

Another thing to look for is a warranty or maintenance package that may make sense for your budget and your requirements.

Location concerns

If you are going to use a generator on multiple job sites in varying weather conditions, a rugged portable generator will suit your needs better. Consider safety when selecting a place to set up your generator. Make sure it is out of the way of traffic and a practical distance from water sources or other trouble spots.

Popular brands and models

There is a large variety of electric generators on the market to serve almost any need, from emergency to recreational to commercial. Here is a snapshot of what you can expect to find:

Depending on location and use, electric generators can cost more than just the unit price of a few hundred to several thousand dollars. You may need to purchase transfer switches, pay for installation or that warranty or maintenance package. Also compare run times to make sure you get the most value for your dollar.

A cheaper generator that runs for a short period of time may not be as cost effective as a generator with longer run times. Longer run times mean increased productivity, less disruptions and fewer worries.

Industries that need generators

Standby and portable electric generators can power everything from a coffee maker to a hospital, hence the wide variety in outputs and models. Businesses, schools, medical facilities and emergency services use generators to ensure they are fully functional in case of power outage, weather or disaster circumstances.

Construction and industrial sites frequently use generators on job sites to power work tools and increase productivity. On the fun side of things, campers and tailgaters use them to make their weekends away more fun and functional.

The key is to know what, where and why you are going to use the generator. Once you know those factors, the decision comes down to maintenance and affordability.
