Editor's Note
Graybar, electrical and communication products distributor, is keen on providing its employees with education and training opportunities. For top managers, it created with Rutgers University a certificate program in supply chain management.

The 15-month program is selective. Participants must show leadership potential and be recommended by their district vice president. What’s unique about it is not only is much of the coursework conducted online, it’s also developed with an eye toward participants attaining real-world skills. Graybar management helps prepare the curriculum and mentors capstone projects. One recent project on price forecasting now is being used internally.

One graduate, Patrick Davis, electrical sales director in Boston, says his experience has helped him think strategically. “The program makes Graybar a more dynamic company and partner,” he says. “Customers like to know their partner has management in place that understands challenges of doing business and is capable of helping solve their problems.”
