Ingenuity is the order of business for MRO distributors and customers impacted by the flooding in Iowa. The Applied Industrial Technologies service center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was without telephones and Internet access but employees found a way to process orders and service their customers. They used laptops and wireless air cards to communicate with the corporate office in Cleveland, says Kurt Tennyson, general manager in Cedar Rapids.
As for their customers, one not able to operate due to lack of water and power generated by a flooded coal-burning facility is using the downtime to perform maintenance on its equipment. Another, a food-processing plant in Waterloo did remain in operation. The Applied service center was able to make deliveries despite roads being shut: Employees took an alternative, albeit longer, route around the city. The distributor’s suppliers offered to help expedite orders by delivering goods via air transportation.
