After rising to an estimated $1.66 trillion in 2000, total spending among the nation's Top 250 purchasing and supply management organizations plunged to an estimated $1.41 trillion in 2001. Much of this is attributable to the recession that struck in the latter half of last year-lower revenues simply meant fewer buys.
